Scruffy

Although we always say we do not take owner surrenders on occasion and in very extreme circumstances we have taken a couple. Scruffy is one of them and we are so happy we did.
We had so much fun with Scruffy while we were fostering him that we knew when we said goodbye the house would feel empty without him.
One night I was driving home by myself and I was singing with the radio when Scruffy started to sing. He tilted his little head up to my face, looked me in the eyes and sang with everything he had. I was laughing so hard I thought I was going to have to stop the car. We sand and I laughed all the way home. When I got home I could not wait to show Mike and Katie, but Scruffy would not sing for them and they just looked at me like I was crazy. I guess it is a car thing, or a shyness thing, he never sang in front of Mike.
Scruffy was adopted by a great family from NH and we are so happy that he has found his forever home.

  1. "Scruffy" can indeed sing! Although now I should say "Coco" can sing. My girls have started Scruffy's new life with us by giving him a fresh name (somewhat inspired by Red Sox outfielder Coco Crisp). It turns out that, if he's got the energy, Coco will sing any time he hears a high note, which my 8 year old daughter has quickly developed a knack for producing. We had great laughs with Coco last night as he sat on the arm of the sofa and hooted and howled along... but after a few minutes, he does need to rest his voice.

As I write this, Coco and his new playmate, a 1yr old dachshund/shih-tzu named Ozzie, are in one of our bay windows playing "watchdog" barking at our neighbors on their daily morning walk. After a few days of wrestling and rough-housing, they are definitely finding some common ground.

A surprising attribute, given his smaller size, is that this boy can jump and climb! On his first day in the house, he managed his way through a missing pane in our mudroom door - a good 3 feet off the floor. The pane had been broken last week and was removed and Coco had been run ragged by Ozzie and decided he needed some space, so he jumped up and climbed through that opening! We have since repaired it, but Coco found that he could just as easily get away by climbing the safety gate from the kitchen into our family room, which is a good thing as I can understand he might get tired of playing with Ozzie and need some space of his own.

We are enjoying this new addition to our family. He's very content to share his time with us and receives lots of affection in return. He seems very comfortable here after only a few days and has established his own place in our home and lives.
