The first time I saw Ben's picture he was on the sick ward in a high kill shelter. Away from the public eye he had very little chance of being adopted before his time ran out. The fact is I thought from his picture he looked like my own dog Titan and I set off on a crazy mission to get this dog out of NYC.
There were some obstacles, as always. The people at the shelter in NYC did not know me, Ben had 24 hours before euthanasia and I could not get to NYC in time to save him myself, all of the people I knew in NYC were busy and the ones that were passing through did not have room in their cars. It really seemed hopeless. People said you can't save them all. I know that I just wanted to save Ben.
Finally I think people got sick of me calling and listening to me talk about this dog and a friend of a friend agreed to drive into NYC and get Ben and then meet me in CT. I am so GRATEFUL to them.
When I picked Ben up he had a cough, I had never taken a dog from NY before so I assumed it was kennel cough. It was canine influenza and it nearly killed him. I should mention that Ben looked NOTHING like Titan in person, but he was the sweetest dog ever. When we got home that night he walked into my house, kissed all of my dogs and climbed up on the couch next to my husband. Over the next couple of months Ben got healthier and learned a couple of manners. Ben was adopted by an awesome family in Cabot VT, with lots of land, kids and a couple of horse friends. We are so happy for all of them.-Shane
