Bailey

Bailey. To this day we cry when we talk about our Bailey.
Bailey lived on the run on the streets of Hartford CT for months. She eluded animal control officers best efforts to capture her. As the months went by they continued to chase her. Then they noticed she was pregnant. Finally they caught up to Bailey. She had just had her puppies and they followed her to the abandoned pick up truck they were in. Bailey was scared of these people that had been chasing her and she defended her babies against the intruders. It was a dangerous battle for the officers and for Bailey. The officers prevailed and Bailey and her six puppies wound up in the pound.
Once in the pound Bailey was still very scared. She was very protective of her babies and snarled at people that tried to care for her.
When we first got the call about Bailey and her babies we did not know if we could handle it. We did not have any experience with aggressive dogs or small puppies. We thought about it for a few days hoping a more experienced rescue would come forward and take them.
No one came forward.
We drove to CT not knowing what to expect, but we fell in love with Bailey the first night we brought her home. We learned so much from Bailey about love, mothering, instinct and loss. Bailey was an excellent mother. Her six babies (the interns) thrived in her care. She did everything perfectly.
As time went on we started to introduce Bailey to other dogs, and it did not go well. The more time passed the more dog aggressive she became. Her aggression was severe and while she loved people and was totally trustworthy with strangers, children and our family we knew we could not adopt her out. We knew that Bailey would always present a danger to other dogs and we could not take the chance she would hurt another dog someday.
Months after she came into our home and became a part of our family we had to put Bailey to sleep. We loved her and we miss her every day.-Shane
