5 Years!
In some ways it seems like yesterday that we picked Sophie up from the Hartford Pound and NNEDR was born. In others it seems like ages ago that we would naively set off late at night to dangerous locations, to pick up strange dogs in dark parking lots. There have been great joys and tremendous heartbreaks for all of the NNEDR volunteers and family. We have been with dogs when they had their puppies and we have held the heads of great friends in our laps, cried over them and said final goodbyes. We have had huge happiness when perfect matches are made and dogs leave for their forever homes, and we have sometimes felt our hearts break a little when a beloved foster dog leaves. We have had many energetic fun fosters and volunteers over the years that have become like family to us that we will always remember. To all of our fosters and volunteers past and present, THANK YOU! We would not be a rescue without volunteers. To the families that have adopted a dog (or several) from us THANK YOU for rescuing a dog through us and helping us in the process to rescue others. As always we would love to hear from you and your canine companion.
Thank you to my family... my husband who patiently supports the rescue that hijacked his life five years ago, my kids who have had their share of late night dog runs, a sleepless night or two lost to barking dogs, for bottle feeding, training, cleaning, walking, answering the phone, checking references and hanging on just one more minute while I finish an email to a potential adopter... you are great kids. Thank you.

Squishy
Hi Shane,
It is with great sadness that I report that our wonderful Squishy passed away last Thursday, Sept 30th, at 7:30pm. We noticed on Wed that her belly was very swollen and distended so we took her to the vet..We found out that she had a massive cancerous tumor on her spleen and both her sleen and tumor were bleeding into her belly. At that time she had about 3 litres of blood in her belly...we took her home as she wasn't in any distress yet...by Thurs. evening Squishy let us know that it was time for her to leave. Surrounded and cuddled by me, Warren, Mitchell and Jack, Squishy peacefully passed away knowing how much she was loved and wanted. We are having her cremated and hopefully we can pick her up and bring her back home next week...
Thank you sooooooo much for allowing Squishy to adopt our family 3 years ago, and I still can't believe that she is gone...I can't tell you how much we all miss and love her and she really was the most amazing, perfect dog. She is my 4th greyhound that cancer has stolen from our family and it never gets easier.
Love always
Jill, Warren, Jack and Mitchell
and Venus, 14.5 yr old heartbroken greyhound

Upcoming Events
Join NNEDR dogs, volunteers and alumni for two special events!
This weekend September 26, 2010 at noon we will be on the green in Lebanon NH for Rescues and Runways. This is a fashion show sponsored by MAURICES clothing store. Models will be walking the runway with NNEDR's adoptable dogs. It is a great opportunity for people to see the dogs, hear their stories and learn about rescue. We would love to see you there.
On October 2, 2010 is the return of Bark in the Park! For years we have enjoyed this event with many returning alumni dogs. It has been a great day for us to catch up with adopters, dogs we have loved and our available dogs. Bark in the Park happens on the green in Norwich VT. It is a great way to spend a fall day, fun for families and fun for dogs. We look forward to seeing you!

And a few more....
Atiya (ABOVE) was a part of an orphaned litter that was bottle fed by volunteers. She came to us at 24 hours old. Here is an update from her family. Now two years old and an amazingly well-behaved and cherished member of the family! We hike and mountain bike together all the time. She loves to dig in the mud and bury marrow bones as you can see by this picture.Thank you for bring this four-legged bundle of joy into our lives!!!!Abby and Kris
Below is a picture of Vivian and her brother Jack. Vivian has adjusted and is much loved by her family in Vermont.
Hi Shane,
Wanted to update you on our little boy – not so little anymore. Casey is a few months short of 2 years old, full grown and 70 lbs. He is a beautiful boy, muscled and athletic. Just such fun to play with and the best hiking companion ever! Yes, he’s a bed-hog and a shedding machine but we don’t care. He’s our buddy, and I think it’s mutual.
He took to snow like he was made for it. It never slowed him down, and his little feet worked just fine in it. He climbed mountains, rode with the horses and switched his ever-present tennis balls for snowballs. As long as he has something to run after, he seems to be happy!
For Christmas, we did the DNA test on him – curious to find out what his breeding really is. He came back with one parent full-blooded Lab, and the other half-Lab and half-Irish Setter. That may be where a lot of his goofiness comes from. But he is a smart little dude, and mostly very well behaved. He is still a baby, after all.
Now that our pond has melted, he is back to cooling himself with a swim before dinner. Life is good. For all of us. Thank you, Shane and NNEDR for bringing us together. We wouldn’t trade little Chase-Case for all the money in the world!
Harriet, Rich and Casey
Sorry, I have been so bad about posting updates.
We just wanted to give you an update on my favorite dog ever, Benson. Truly my best friend (aside from Tonia) he has turned into a wonderful companion. He has settled into his new home quite nicely and knows that he is here to stay now. We no longer use the crate for him and hhe has free roam of the back yard (which he loves to run) and the entire house. Never have we had an accident with him going potty in the house. He had some separation anxiety in the beginning if he was left alone while at work, or if we went on a small trip and did tear some stuff up, but with firm training and settling into the home this has moostly become a thing of the past. Flip flops and pillows were a favorite. As Tonia would say, "He is a daddy's boy.", but dont let that fool you. I think I have more pictures of her using him as a pillow or snuggled up to him. The three of us love him to death. He has become a staple in our life and we enjoy his company so much.Though he thinks he is the worlds largest lap dog sometimes. Occasionally if i am laying stretched out on the couch, he will decide its cuddle time and crawl up on top of me and stretch out full length! This isn't a problem for someone my size, but another story with the girls (chuckle). In the beginning after we stopped using the crate he insisted on sleeping with Tonia and I. After time we were also able to break him of that habit and he now sleeps on the couch all night... after I tuck him in. Yep, he won't actually go to bed unless I go upstairs, and sit with him for about 5 minutes till he gets comfortable. Otherwise he sits at our bedroom door all night and scratches at the door. He used to get up in the middle of the night if one of us got up, but now you would be hard pressed to see him get up before he is darn good and ready. He is maintaining his weight well, and he only eats once a day, combined with walks, running full speed around the yard and sometimes his 3 hour long couch siestas. His coat is full and shiny and the mites that were causing the irritation on his head have subsided. He is starting to get hair growth back there slowly.Memorial day weekend was our first attempt at camping with him. We were unsure how he would do with other dogs and lots of people, but he was an absolute dream. Though the biggest dog there by far, also was the most docile. He was more interested in squirrels and chipmunks than other dogs or people. We bought a larger tent to allow for his size. Our monster 22' x 12' 3 room tent allows for Sierra to have her own Queen size blow up matress, one for Tonia and I, and of course a twin size blow up matress for our boy Benson. Oh and you may also be surprised to hear that he never barks. Ever... wimpers and cries a little but never a bark from him.In closing, he is the best dog I have ever had and I look forward to a long life with him. Keep us updated when the next fashion show is and we can bring him back.Enclosed are pictures that we have collected of him since October.
And these are pictures of Tonka. You can see this stray from NYC is enjoying his life in NH with his forever family. Thank you Patrick and Stephanie for giving him a chance and a family.
